From Dreams to Acceptance: My Writing Path

Caleb Pickon had strived tirelessly to create various portals for years, but each landed him somewhere within the United States—this time was different.”

Fantastical stories like the one above have always filled my mind. I’ve long dreamed of becoming a writer, and I think I’ve finally arrived! My writing journey has depleted pens and paper, served up sore hands and fingers, and filled many trash cans—not everything was pleasing to read! Yet, I persisted.

I was fortunate enough to attend American Military University, where I earned my undergraduate degree in English with a concentration in Creative Writing. My professors gave me room to grow as a writer and never stifled my creativity. I owe a great deal to Professors Penny Freeland and Natascha Gast, who inspired me to pursue a writing career.

Still, I knew I needed more development. So, I applied to several graduate programs, hoping for an opportunity to continue honing my craft. To my surprise and delight, I was accepted into the University of New Orleans’ MFA in Creative Writing Workshop! I’m thrilled about this new chapter and look forward to working alongside faculty and peers who share my passion for writing.

Striving for success is important. At almost forty-three, I’m re-entering academia, and to say I’m not nervous would be an understatement. The thought of grueling study hours, dissecting literature, and furious essay writing doesn’t exactly excite me. But the chance to grow in my craft far outweighs any doubt.

Before I wrap up, I must give thanks to God. He guided my creativity for my writing sample (stay tuned for more on Cloaked Miracles), helped me craft my Statement of Purpose, and blessed me with wonderful people who wrote Letters of Recommendation on my behalf.

I’m grateful to everyone who has supported me along this journey. Your encouragement will not be forgotten.
